چکیده

Article Synopsis: (100 words) The cerebellum is a key structure for the control of movement. However, the exact role of the cerebellum in motor control is unclear or at least highly controversial. One prominent hypothesis is that the cerebellum is important for motor learning. We review the evidence used to support this hypothesis during procedural or skill learning and find that though it is clear that the cerebellum is engaged during the process, there are no unequivocal data showing that the cerebellum is essential for learning to occur.

Internal Models in the Cerebellum: A Coupling Scheme for Online and Offline Learning in Procedural Tasks

The cerebellum plays a major role in motor control. It is thought to mediate the acquisition of forward and inverse internal models of the bodyenvironment interaction [1]. In this study, the main processing components of the cerebellar microcomplex are modelled as a network of spiking neural populations. The model cerebellar circuit is shown to be suitable for learning both forward and inverse ...

Procedural learning in Parkinson's disease and cerebellar degeneration.

We compared procedural learning, translation of procedural knowledge into declarative knowledge, and use of declarative knowledge in age-matched normal volunteers (n = 30), patients with Parkinson's disease (n = 20), and patients with cerebellar degeneration (n = 15) by using a serial reaction time task. Patients with Parkinson's disease achieved procedural knowledge and used declarative knowle...

Is the cerebellum ready for navigation?

Spatial navigation required the acquisition of at least two complementary processes: the organization of the spatial representation of the environment (declarative learning) and the acquisition of a motor behaviour adapted to the specific context (procedural learning). The potential role of the cerebellum in spatial navigation is part of the debate concerning its role in cognitive function. Exp...

Changes in Cerebello-motor Connectivity during Procedural Learning by Actual Execution and Observation

The cerebellum is involved in motor learning of new procedures both during actual execution of a motor task and during observational training. These processes are thought to depend on the activity of a neural network that involves the lateral cerebellum and primary motor cortex (M1). In this study, we used a twin-coil TMS technique to investigate whether execution and observation of a visuomoto...

Coupling internal cerebellar models enhances online adaptation and supports offline consolidation in sensorimotor tasks

The cerebellum is thought to mediate sensorimotor adaptation through the acquisition of internal models of the body-environment interaction. These representations can be of two types, identified as forward and inverse models. The first predicts the sensory consequences of actions, while the second provides the correct commands to achieve desired state transitions. In this paper, we propose a co...
